What are the Different Types of Excavation and Earthmoving?

Excavation involves removing soil and rocks from a certain area. On the other hand, earthmoving is a more comprehensive project demanding the removal of a larger amount of earth in preparation for a project. These processes are common in the construction, agriculture, landscaping, forestry, oil & gas, and mining industries.

Topsoil Excavation
The solid, top layer of soil is removed via topsoil excavation. This process is necessary before a foundation can be poured or pipelines can be installed. Topsoil excavation can also enhance soil drainage, minimize soil erosion, and ultimately improve the growth of vegetation.

Backfilling
Backfilling is done after an excavation is complete. It involves refilling an excavated area with the excavated soil, sand, gravel, crushed stone, or other product.
In construction, backfilling can direct water away from buildings, make buildings more eco-friendly, and protect underground materials. In the field of landscaping, backfilling can create a level area for gardening, improve the drainage of a lawn, and amplify runoff management to preserve the landscape.

Foundation Excavation
As the name implies, foundation excavation involves excavating an area specifically for the purpose of making room to pour a new foundation. When done correctly, foundation excavation can properly support and stabilize a building in the long run. It can also help insulate foundations.

Trenching
Trenching is a common and necessary type of excavation used heavily in construction. This process involves digging deep, narrow straits into the soil.
The creation of these trenches allows construction workers to install utilities for a new-build, such as mainline plumbing pipes or electrical wires. Trenching can also provide access to malfunctioning utility pipes or wires at existing properties for diagnosis and/or replacement.
Once the pipes or wires are installed, the trench is then backfilled with material.

Leveling
Leveling helps make land even and flat. This excavation process is done by digging land and redistributing it until it’s at a certain height and level, usually done before pouring a foundation for construction projects. Leveling of land is also important in landscaping and agriculture as it can ensure proper soil drainage.

Soil Removal
This excavation process involves the removal of “spoils,” which refers to topsoil, rock, and other debris present on or in the Earth. Soil removal is critical to improve the structural basis for the future construction of buildings or roads, prepare for the installation of utilities, or prevent environmental damage if the soil contains pollutants. Spoils can be reused or recycled for the same or other projects, including landscaping. Spoils may also be disposed of in the event that there’s an excess or if they’re contaminated.
